Exploration: Jackson Hole Outfitters

The folks who truly love the Wyoming lifestyle have learned to embrace the vastness and sometimes harsh beauty of this incredible part of the world. While billowing clouds dancing across a blue sky are sometimes best offset by the rolling prairie, there is something next to heavenly to be found in Wyoming’s mountain ranges.

This was certainly the case when we visited Jackson Hole Outfitters (JHO) for a two night stay with accompanying horseback trail rides in the Grey’s river region among the Wyoming and Salt River Mountain ranges. As a group of 11, we were a large party to accommodate for sleeping arrangements, meals, and trail riding. JHO did so seamlessly and left us feeling high on mountain air, good times, and memories that will last.

We arrived into the camp, located 14 miles east from Alpine, Wyoming (30 miles south of Jackson Hole) and were greeted with a steak dinner, generously supplied canvas tents (one for each couple—complete with a mattress and boxspring bed and carpeted floors), and one of a kind views.

On our first morning, the coffee was hot and the breakfast meal hearty prior to our full-day trail ride. We covered approximately 13 miles on horseback in a little over 5 hours. A picnic lunch in the shadows of glacier saddle nicely divided our day. The group returned to camp feeling we’d earned our evening meal… which was delicious, by the way. Without cellular service, free from the hectic pace and distractions of every day life, an evening with friends, watching the stars come out can be down right therapeutic—and it was.

While we took in the smells, sights, and feel of a remote mountain experience, we were in no way roughing it. With flush toilets in the outhouses and hot water in the aptly appointed shower house, not to mention the propane heaters in our large canvas tents, we were “glamping” in style.

Day two was a partial day ride that featured breathtaking views of Virginia Peak, Visser Peak, and Man Peak. Upon arriving back at a camp, we devoured freshly grilled burgers and prepared to say goodbye to the JHO folks who made our group feel like we were old friends who’d simply come for a visit.

We can’t recommend adventuring with JHO enough! Riders as young as 8 years old can participate. While the rides cover remote country that can include rough terrain, the equipment, guides, and horses are well-prepared for guests at every experience level. Camping is optional—we definitely recommend it, especially if you’re doing an all-day ride, but if you’d like to take part in just the trail ride, that is an option.

We combined our camping and riding experience with JHO along with a two night stay in Jackson Hole and whitewater rafting with Jackson Hole Whitewater.
